What are biodynamic wines?

The term ‘organic’ is now familiar to everyone. We are now hearing more and more about biodynamics. We explain what it’s all about and what is meant by biodynamic wines. We also highlight a few fantastic biodynamic wines from our range.

Biodynamic farming

Biodynamic farming aims to promote the ecosystem by optimising natural resources and soil fertility and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides and fertilisers.
Compared to organic farming, biodynamic farming is subject to organic requirements plus additional regulations. These regulations are regularly monitored by independent organisations such as DEMETER or ECOVIN. The principle of biodynamic agriculture is based on keeping the soil naturally and sustainably fertile. This takes the entire ecosystem into account. The result: healthy food and a healthy environment.

Biodynamic wines

Biodynamic wines originate precisely from this form of biodynamic agriculture. Biodynamic wines are wines made from grapes grown in accordance with the principles of biodynamic agriculture. These principles include, amongst other things, the use of natural fertilisers and the application of special preparations for the care of the soil and plants. Biodynamic winegrowers also follow a special calendar that determines the most favourable times for planting, harvesting and tending the vines. The aim of these practices is to create healthy and resilient vineyards that produce high-quality grapes reflecting the character of the terroir. Despite the monoculture inherent in viticulture, biodynamic cultivation creates a natural balance. However, by avoiding chemical inputs, the production of biodynamic wines also means more work and lower yields. This is inevitably reflected in the price. Nevertheless, it is well worth exploring biodynamic wines and, above all, tasting them. The taste and the clear conscience are a double reward.

The difference is also visible: conventionally farmed vineyards look very tidy. In biodynamic vineyards, on the other hand, other plants and herbs grow alongside and around the vines.

Biodynamic wines from Abruzzo

We at Famiglia Mirretta-Barone offer the very best of Abruzzo in our online shop. This naturally includes wine from Abruzzo. All the vineyards and wineries whose wines we offer in our shop have been personally selected by us. We are convinced of the quality of these wines – why not see for yourself!

Biodynamic wines from Rosarubra

It is important to note that every biodynamic winegrower may use their own specific methods and techniques to achieve the best results in their vineyard.
The Cantina Rosarubra is an organic winery in Pietranico, a small municipality in the Abruzzo province of Pescara. The Rosarubra winery produces excellent wines from biodynamic cultivation. Demeter certification guarantees biodynamic farming that protects the climate, the soil and natural resources.
Rosarubra itself states on its website:

In addition to organic certification, we have obtained Demeter biodynamic certification because we believe in the principle underlying this discipline: restoring the soil’s fertility to its original state.

An absolute highlight and one of our personal favourites from the Rosarubra winery is the Intimo I.G.T. Colline Pescaresi. This is made from an overripe harvest of Montepulciano and Merlot grapes. Montepulciano is, incidentally, typical of the Abruzzo region. Rosarubra’s Intimo is produced from vines that are over 35 years old. The wine is aged in oak barrels and is allowed to mature for a further six months in the bottle. The result is an explosion of flavour from extractive elements reminiscent of sour cherry, plum and red fruits, revealing harmoniously balanced tannins.
