About the
Miretta-Barone Family

A passion for good, healthy food has been in our family’s blood for generations. Our ancestors in the Italian Abruzzo region, right up until our grandparents’ time, were still 100% self-sufficient and had to make a living solely from livestock farming and agriculture. For them, there was no alternative, so it was only natural to raise cows, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals in order to use and utilize them accordingly.

Our production in Abruzzo

In addition to raising livestock, the cultivation of olives, grapes, wheat, corn, and all kinds of other vegetables and fruits played a crucial role in survival. People lived in harmony with the seasons and relied on nature’s bounty—but in years of poor harvests, they had to endure severe hardships and find ways to survive. Life was often very hard and full of deprivation. Due to the region’s remote location and the topography of Abruzzo, there were hardly any trade relations with neighboring regions, let alone with foreign countries.

Production was intended for personal consumption and for trade within the local communities and districts. As a result, the agricultural products of Abruzzo have retained their authentic character to this day and have not been adapted to suit other tastes.

Nature Conservation

With the highest proportion of protected natural areas in Italy, Abruzzo is home to bears, eagles, and many other animal species.

Culture

Castles, mountain villages, and Roman ruins bear witness to a rich history.

Agriculture

Small family farms, practicing traditional farming methods, are a hallmark of the region.

Enjoyment

Known for its excellent olive oil, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and specialties such as pasta alla chitarra and arrosticini.

Since the late 1990s, we have been working to restore and revitalize our family-owned olive groves, which have been in our family for generations but had fallen into neglect. Among them are many ancient native olive varieties found nowhere else in Italy. We have made it our mission to breathe new life into these very varieties in order to produce our extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality.

The result is a typical olive oil from Abruzzo: very fruity yet not overly pungent—a well-balanced, mild olive oil with plenty of flavor! Try it for yourself and let us know what you think.

We look forward to your feedback!
